Voices of Family
This is a very personal program, centered on the human voice and created in collaboration with my husband, composer Lembit Beecher. The voices of my mother and grandmother appear along with music of my family’s past home of Anatolia, the Ottoman Armenian villages where my family were from, music and stories drawn from my family’s post-Genocide home in Lebanon, and the beloved music of Charles Aznavour. Lembit’s compositions, original music reflecting upon the experience of childhood, migration and the passage of time, are woven throughout, and music by friends Nathalie Joachim, Niloufar Nourbakhsh and Layale Chaker expand upon the themes of generational transmission, community, rootedness and uprootedness, with music that is full of passion, rage and celebration, in tribute to our ancestors. Opening and closing the program is the gorgeous baroque piece “Les Voix Humaines” (the human voices) by Marin Marais, music from hundreds of years ago providing a window into the present.
